A Guide to Finding the Best Food in Hvar

Hvar has a lot to offer, including great food. Whether you're seeking casual eateries, upscale restaurants, cozy cafes, or handmade gelato, Hvar has it all. Here’s a detailed guide to finding the best food in Hvar, featuring our favorite dining spots on the island.

Hvar Restaurants

Ambiance + Great Food: Mediterraneo Dine & Wine

For a more upscale dining experience, head to Mediteraneo in Old Town. This hard-to-get table recently landed in the Michelin Guide. The service, food, and wine were exceptional. We loved the Krauthaker 'Rosenberg' Chardonnay, known locally as "The King of Chardonnay." The seafood was incredible — it’s hard to go wrong with the amazing menu options. Plan ahead in order to get your reservation.

Family-Run, Exceptional Food: Paradise Garden

Paradise Garden offers a stunning outdoor setting with excellent food and service. This was one of our favorite meals and one of the few we found that takes later dinner reservations, allowing for a full beach day. This family-run restaurant is truly a hidden gem, offering Mediterranean dishes in a gorgeous open air setting. It truly offers some of the best food in Hvar. We were wow’d throughout the entire meal.

Traditional Food with a Twist: Stajun

Stajun was recommended by the owner of our Airbnb. It offers a comfortable open air setting steps from the main square. The menu changes seasonally, with ingredients sourced from local farms and fishmen. Local wines are also front and center on the wine list (Pošip is one of my favorite Croatian white wines). Stop by for good food and friendly service in a relaxed setting.

Pizza by the Sea: Buffet Pizzeria BEPO

Bepo offers a casual dining experience right on the water. It was located a few blocks from our apartment, making it a good choice for our first night. BEPO blends Croatian and Italian flavors seamlessly, and pasta, pizza and seafood are all solid choices. Simple and tasty food, local wines, and beautiful views.

Dine in the Heart of Town: La Bocca Pizza

We found ourselves starving midday and decided to try La Bocca Pizza, which is located in the heart of the main square. Typically we steer clear of these restaurants since they are often overpriced and underwhelming. We were pleasantly surprised by La Bocca! Great quality pizza and very friendly service. Don’t pass this one by!

Hvar Coffee shops & Sweet treats

Modern Cafe: Kava37

Located in the center of town, this coffee shop is bustling from morning through the early afternoon, and for good reason. Kava37 is only open during the summer months, so if you’re there at the right time, stop in!

Caffeine Buzz: Coffee Snob

We discovered Coffee Snob near Paradise Garden, and were happy we did! This sweet spot offers delicious coffee and matcha drinks, with friendly staff and a modern, yet cozy vibe.

Phil's Favorite: L'Amore Per II Gelato

This popular spot draws a crowd, in part thanks to being featured on the show Somebody Feed Phil. Don’t let the long line scare you away. It moves quickly and the handmade, curated gelato is worth it.

Hvar Wine & Cocktails

Local Wines To Go: Vijola Wine

When we're on vacation, we love seeking out the local wines. Vijola became a go-to for us while in Hvar. It's located on the main square and offers a large selection of Croatian wines, among many others. The friendly and knowledgeable staff helped us discover some excellent local options.

Outdoor Cocktails: Ka'lavanda Bar

Ka'lavanda Bar is a perfect place for an early evening cocktail and people-watching. Located just off the main square, this bar offers great cocktails, but at a premium price. We enjoyed it because we sat outside and it wasn’t too crowded. My guess is that the ambiance changes quite a bit as the night goes on (not for the better). So, go early.

Hvar’s offers a diverse culinary scene, mastering Mediterranean cuisine and highlighting local ingredients. Take your pick…from casual seaside spots to higher end dining, there’s so much to enjoy in this beautiful Croatian paradise!
