Exploring the Flavors of Puerto Vallarta

Puerto Vallarta is known for its vibrant food scene, with a range of local restaurants and street vendors offering some of the best authentic Mexican cuisine. During our family’s recent visit, we decided to book a taco tour and get an insider’s take on some of the city's most popular spots.

I used to be apprehensive about paying for food tours, worried that I would be just one of many vying for a small food sample being passed around on a tray at one storefront after another. However, after trying out my second tour, I have become a fan. The key is to do your research. Read reviews and ensure that the groups are small (less than 10 people), the guides are from the area, and the restaurants are authentic. By following these tips, you can truly enjoy an immersive culinary experience that not only offers amazing food but also gives you a glimpse into the local culture and way of life. For us, it was the perfect way to explore Puerto Vallarta.

Mariscos El Guero

First up was Mariscos El Guero, where we tried the taco de pescado (fish taco). The fish was perfectly fried and served with a simple array of toppings. Pico de gallo and freshly made sauces, ranging in level of heat, made these tacos super tasty. It's a cute spot in a great location worth checking out.

Memo's Grill

Next, we visited Memo's Grill Taco Stand - the oldest taco stand in Puerto Vallarta! Here, we tried the volcan. This uniquely delicious taco is made with grilled meat and melted cheese. The combination of flavors and textures was simply delicious. It's clear why this amazing location draws a crowd.

La Tia Mariscos

At La Tia Mariscos, we sampled the taco de marlin, a unique taco crafted from smoked marlin. The flavor was so distinct and delicious that it was hard to believe it was marlin. Among all the dishes we tried on our tour, this taco stood out as the favorite, winning the most votes from our group. The smoky, savory taste of the marlin combined perfectly with the fresh taco ingredients, making it a memorable highlight.

El Carboncito

El Carboncito was next on the list to sample tacos al pastor, marinated pork tacos that were truly indulgent. The pork was juicy and packed with flavor, while the addition of grilled pineapple and cilantro created a perfect balance of sweet and savory. Each bite was an explosion of taste, a great showcase of this traditional taco preparation.

Julio's Churros

For dessert, we visited Julio's Churros for their famous churros. The dough was expertly pushed through a mold into hot oil, resulting in crispy fried churros coated in cinnamon sugar. Each one was scooped into a paper bag and handed to us, warm with mouth watering aromas. As a churro lover, I can confidently say these were the best I've ever had.

Tasting Room

We ended the night at the Tasting Room where they make expertly crafted cocktails. The modern interior stood out among the more classic restaurants and souvenir shops. Stop by to enjoy the welcoming space and one of their many tasting experiences—from wine to tequila. To finish the night, we sipped on a high end tequila and enjoyed a final cocktail as we reminisced about a wonderful evening of local delicacies.

If you find yourself in Puerto Vallarta, I highly recommend the Vallarta Food Tours. We booked the taco tour, but there are many others to choose from including bike tours, tequila tastings and more. I like scheduling food tours at the beginning of the trip to learn more about the city and authentic food and drinks. You can also discover local spots that you might not have found otherwise. It’s a great way to start any trip!
