Wine Night Essentials

Wine nights are easier, and more fun, when you’ve got the right tools within reach. You don’t need a lot, and in most cases they don’t need to cost a lot. A little planning and a few essentials in your bar (or even just your kitchen cabinet) make all the difference. Here are my go-to items for a perfect wine—or cocktail—night.

  • Opener & Preserver

Coravin

If you love the idea of opening a special bottle without committing to finishing it, the Coravin system is a game changer. Using a thin needle, it allows you to pour a glass without pulling the cork, preserving the wine for weeks (or longer). They’ve even developed a system for champagne lovers! It took me awhile to commit to this purchase, but I wish I would have done so sooner. For me, it’s the perfect way to enjoy a glass without feeling the pressure of finishing the bottle within a day or two.

Vaccum Pump

Not ready to splurge? A simple vacuum pump keeps wine fresh for a few extra days. It’s compact, easy to use, and perfect for weeknight drinking. We’ve been using a Vacu Vin pump for years and bring it with us everywhere.

Corkscrew

Every wine lover needs a dependable opener. I prefer a no-fuss waiter’s friend style corkscrew. It’s small, reliable, and easy to use. Some people prefer an automated style, or something like the Rabbit, but I find those overly complex and always come back to a more simple option.

  • Cocktail Tools

Crystal Stirring Glass

We were sitting at the bar at my favorite local restaurant, Social Bird, watching the bartender whip up cocktails when I fell in love (maybe a touch strong) with his stirring glass. Turns out, it’s quite affordable! This beautiful bar piece can be found for under $30 on Amazon. A stylish way to make your favorite drink at home.

The Nomad Cocktail Book

My daughter gifted this little book to my husband, and it has become his go-to. From the Loisaida Avenue to the Taxi Dancer, it has really upped his cocktail game. Definitely the gift that keeps on giving.

  • Glassware

Wine Glasses

We’re a little addicted to glassware in our house and have more options than we need. The truth is, you only really need one type of red wine glass and one type of white wine glass. Cocktail glasses could be their own list, so I’ll stay focused here on wine.

When shopping, think about your lifestyle: Do you want them to be dishwasher safe? Are kids or large parties a factor? Do you prefer a traditional shape or something a little unique? There are options from $15 per glass to well over $100 (I recently drank from these at Arrow & Branch and they are stunning). Once you know what matters most, check out Riedel, The One Wine Glass by Andre Immer, and Sur la Table for inspiration.

Decanter

A decanter allows more oxygen to come in contact with the wine, smoothing the tannins and letting the fruit characteristics shine. For many red wines, it’s the key to ensuring they’re ready to drink when you are. Similar to glasses, there are endless options at every price point. We use a Riedel model that’s affordable and easy to store, and also have one with a wide base that works especially well for fuller-bodied reds. Tip: invest in the right cleaning tools so your decanter doesn’t stain over time.

  • Accessories

Cooling Sleeve

If you’re taking wine to go, or want to keep your rosé at the right temperature during summer, a cooling sleeve is a great option. It folds flat for freezer storage and saves you from hauling out an ice bucket.

Glass Markers

Entertaining? Glass markers add a fun touch and make it easy for everyone to keep track of their glasses.

At the end of the day, wine nights don’t need to be complicated. A few thoughtful tools make everything easier, whether you’re opening a midweek bottle, mixing a cocktail, or pouring something special to share with friends. Simple, useful, and reliable—these are the tools I keep coming back to.
