Wines Worth Exploring: Txakoli from Spain
Today, let’s take a closer look at Txakoli (cha-ko-lee), a refreshing white wine from Spain’s Basque region. This one practically screams summer. If the weather is warm and you’re looking for something light and zippy to sip, look no further.
Discovering Txakoli
The Back Story
The Basque region is tucked into the northeastern corner of Spain, just north of the more well-known Rioja. Txakoli has been made here since at least the 16th century, but it started gaining global attention in the late 1990s. Today, its low alcohol and refreshing profile make it an increasingly popular choice, especially in warm weather.
Grape Varietals
Txakoli is most commonly made from Hondarribi Zuri (white) and Hondarribi Beltza (red), although there are other permitted grapes depending on the subregion.
Structure
Typically very dry and light-bodied with naturally low alcohol—often under 10%. It has a slight spritz that adds to its crisp, refreshing character. While reds and rosés are produced, white Txakoli is much more common.
Flavor Profile
Green apple, lime, and dried herbs, with delicate floral notes and often a touch of salinity. It’s meant to be consumed young, so go ahead and open that bottle!
Food Pairing Suggestions
Txakoli was made for seafood—shrimp, scallops, grilled fish, or oysters. Or take a cue from Spain and enjoy it with pintxos (Basque-style tapas).
