Where to Stay on Puglia’s Western Coast: Tenuta Negroamaro
I'd landed in Brindisi late, driven fifty minutes towards Gallipoli, and pulled up to Tenuta Negroamaro well after dark on Easter Sunday. Dinner service was long over, but a table for one was set. I sat down and was served a delicious charcuterie plate filled with local meat, cheese, and bread. Next came the slow-roasted Easter lamb on the best mashed potatoes I've ever had in my life — and I'm not even a big fan of mashed potatoes. It was a special welcome that made me feel immediately at home despite having just landed in another country.
The Property
Tenuta Negroamaro sits about three miles east of Gallipoli, surrounded by the low, dry landscape that defines southern Puglia. The entire property has just eight rooms, a pool and wellness area, a working farm, and an outstanding restaurant.
The exterior has an almost ancient quality you find throughout this part of Italy — stone walls, wooden fences, and terracotta floors. The interiors are beautifully decorated in a way that incorporates light and nature everywhere. The feeling is warm and peaceful.
Each room is unique with its own special "thing." For me, it was a swing sitting in my large fenced-in atrium (next to the outdoor shower). Open air, private, and the perfect place to read or rest.
Farm-to-Table in Puglia
Tenuta Negroamaro isn't just a hotel with a nice restaurant. It has a working farm, which leads to the extreme freshness of all the food. At breakfast — included in the rate — the buffet includes yogurt, local honey, homemade pastries, and fresh fruit, vegetables, prosciutto, and cheeses. Cappuccinos, lattes, and tea are bottomless. Perfectly cooked eggs are also available to order.
There are also animals on the property: donkeys, pigs, chickens, lambs, cats, and two sweet dogs who often joined me during mealtimes.
The Staff
The staff at Tenuta Negroamaro made the place extra special. From the woman who greeted me late in the evening upon my arrival, to the evening chef and the morning chef, to staff members who were eager to provide tips on where to go and what to see. I was always met with a warm smile and a genuine desire to make my stay exceptional. It surpassed expectations.
On my last evening, I sat by the pool and ordered a spritz, which arrived free of charge — an unnecessary gift that I fully appreciated. Afterward, I walked a few steps to dinner and since it was a bit cool, I sat inside next to the windows overlooking the grounds. A young couple came in after the temperature dropped further and we enjoyed a lovely conversation before diving into our own meals. It was a place that made meeting others easy.
Exploring the Salento Coast
Tenuta Negroamaro is a good base for exploring the Ionian Sea side of Puglia and part of the southern Salento coast. Gallipoli is about ten minutes west — a beautiful town on the water, full of bars, restaurants, and gelaterie. It was absolutely packed on Easter Monday, which is a public holiday in Italy and a day dedicated to strolling. There’s easy parking on surrounding streets; just bring coins for the meters in case the card reader isn't working.
A short drive north brings you to Santa Maria del Bagno and, just beyond it, Santa Cristina. These smaller, quieter towns offer the same beautiful views of the Ionian Sea. You could drive between them, but I enjoyed walking the waterfront at a pace that was, apparently, still too fast — I overtook every group ahead of me. Italians have the art of the stroll completely figured out. Slow, arm in arm, no phones, nowhere else to be. It was one of the most memorable things I saw on the entire trip.
Before you leave, be sure to grab a gelato and soak in the sea.
Who This Place is For
Tenuta Negroamaro isn't for everyone, and I mean that in the best possible way. It's not a beach resort. It's not a party hotel. It's small and quiet, particularly in the shoulder season when the crowds haven't arrived yet and you have the pool mostly to yourself. It's the kind of place you come to relax and slow down.
If you want to be near the action, it's close enough to Gallipoli to enjoy the night scene. But the appeal of this place is the retreat from all of that. The swing, the pool, the farm, the restaurant — it all signals a different tempo. April and October are ideal: the weather is good, the property is peaceful, and the coast hasn't filled up yet.
