Just over the border in Basilicata sits Matera, one of the oldest cities in the world. It's an easy day trip from Puglia and an unforgettable one, a whole city carved into stone with thousands of years of history behind it.

The White City of Ostuni, the trulli of Alberobello, and a beautiful stretch of Adriatic coast. This second leg of my Puglia road trip winds through the hill towns and countryside of the Valle d'Itria before ending at the sea.

Touring the stunning Salento coast by car is the way to go. Here are the towns I visited as I made my way from Gallipoli on the Ionian Sea to Otranto on the Adriatic Coast, landing in the historic streets of Lecce.
